Leland Stanford

Share this video Leland Stanford was born on March 24, 1824 in Watervliet, New York, studied law at Cazenovia Seminary, and was admitted to the bar in 1848. 4 years later, he followed his brothers to California, and spent the next three years operating a successful supply store for gold rush settlers. His connections and stature lead to many successful business ventures which established him as a wealthy railroad tycoon. After loosing their only son at the age of 15, the Stanfords decided that “the children of California shall be our children” and find a philanthropic endeavor to memorialize their son. They then established Stanford University which opened it’s doors in 1891. Stanford was a member of Prometheus Lodge No.17 and Michigan Lodge No. 47. On June 21, 1893, Brother Leland Stanford was called from labor, and was laid to rest at the family mausoleum ay the Stanford University Campus.
