The cable tow refers to ones personal ability to respond. In general masons must determine for themselves what is the length of their own cable tow. In other words, how far they are willing and able to go to in fulfilling their obligations to their lodge and to their brethren. In ages past, some masons were so mindful of their duties that they traveled 2 hours by horse. Some lodges known as lunar lodges coincided meetings with the full moon to light the path of such travelers. Even today it takes some of us almost two hours to get to lodge and two hours going home again. A cable tow should not be confused with a cables length which is 608 feet internationally and 720 feet in the US.
